The World Is More Magical
Than It First Appears
A collection of original paintings by Donna Fox
Artist StatementI've always suspected the world is a little more magical than it lets on.
Maybe that's why I've loved the color purple since I was a little girl. Long before I understood composition or color theory, purple felt like perfection. Decades later, it still finds its way into nearly every painting I create. Sometimes it's obvious. Sometimes it's hidden beneath layers of paint, quietly influencing everything that comes after.
In many ways, that's how I see life.
I don't paint fantasy worlds. I paint this one. Only a little brighter, a little more curious, and a little more willing to believe that ordinary things have extraordinary stories to tell.
A flower can dance. A teacup has memories. A raven knows something it isn't saying. A still life can feel like an old friend because the stories of our lives are filled with the objects that were part of them. My paintings invite you to pause long enough to remember the moments where you felt that magic, too.
If they make you smile, ask questions, or imagine a story that wasn't there a moment ago, they've done exactly what I hoped they would.
About the Artist, Donna FoxMy path to becoming an artist wasn't a straight one.
For years I built businesses, led marketing teams, and helped other people bring their ideas into the world. It was meaningful work, but somewhere along the way I realized I wanted to spend the rest of my life creating beauty instead of making beautiful systems.
So I made the leap.
Today I'm building a professional art career one painting at a time, learning, experimenting, failing, growing, and sharing the entire journey as I go. My paintings often begin as technical studies or assignments, but by the time they're finished they've become something much more personal. Every canvas teaches me something about courage, curiosity, patience, or hope.
I've come to believe that my life is the art.
The paintings are simply the chapters.
Perhaps that's why so much of my work feels nostalgic, whimsical, and quietly optimistic. I don't believe wonder belongs only to children. I think adults need it just as much. We need reminders that beauty is worth noticing, that imagination is still useful, and that life can surprise us if we're willing to look closely.
The artists who first captured my imagination—Dr. Seuss, Disney's animators, and Norman Rockwell—didn't just create beautiful images. They created worlds that made people feel something. They found humor in everyday moments, personality in ordinary objects, and magic hiding in plain sight. That way of seeing the world has stayed with me ever since.
Creating art is only part of the dream.
The other part is building a community where creativity flourishes. Whether it's through organizing sketching groups, sharing what I'm learning, or encouraging someone to pick up a paintbrush for the first time, I believe art becomes even more meaningful when it brings people together.
If you've found your way here, I hope my work gives you permission to slow down for a moment.
To notice.
To wonder.
To smile at the possibility that the world is more enchanting than it first appears.
And if one of my paintings eventually finds a home on your wall, my greatest hope isn't that it becomes part of my story.
It's that it becomes part of yours.
